Three men set a new world record for the longest television-watching marathon - after enduring an 87-hour stint over five days.
Dan Jordan, Spencer Larson and Chris Laughlin achieved the honour during the Consumer Electronics show at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Nevada.
The trio, all from Las Vegas, watched programing from two TiVo Roamio digital video recorders that had been broadcast and recorded ahead of the attempt
They were allowed breaks of five minutes per hour to use the bathroom or nap, in accordance with Guinness World Records rules for the category.
While allowed to save the five-minute breaks, the longest anyone slept during the 87 hours at any one time was 80 minutes.
They underwent regular medical checkups throughout and were allowed to change channels and eat and drink while they watched, but were not allowed to read or talk on the phone at the same time.

Karachi: Pakistani police has registered an FIR against a two-and-a-half-year-old boy on dacoity and snatching charges in the most populous Punjab province. The FIR was registered at the Daulat Gate police station in Multan against the toddler, Saud, on the complaint of a person named Arshad who apparently had a property dispute with Saud's mother, the Samaa TV channel reported.
The matter came to light when the mother approached the court last week and informed it about the incident.
The court then sought an explanation from the Station House Officer of Daulat Gate police station. "We have suspended the SHO and are investigating the matter," a senior police officer said. "It is a very embarrassing for the police department because the SHO should have first confirmed the age of the person against whom the FIR was registered and also called him to the station for questioning," he said.

PATNA: Some of the people seen with begging bowls in the state are literate and earn up to Rs 600 a day. They belong to different religions, castes and age groups but few of them hold ration cards. These findings have come out through a survey conducted in two districts - Patna and Gaya - under the state government's Mukhyamantri Bhikshavriti Nivaran Yojana (MBNY).
The recently-held survey conducted by an independent agency on pilot basis identified 2,356 beggars in Gaya and Bodh Gaya and 2,223 in Patna.
At least 15 of them are matriculates and one Intermediate pass in Patna and two matriculates in Gaya. In Patna, about 300 of them earn between Rs 200-600 per day and in Gaya, 18 beggars earn up to Rs 500 per day.Labels: Begging, Earn, Literate

Doctors had to surgically remove a 0.8 inch cockroach from a man’s ear after it crawled inside while he was asleep, according to Australian media reports.
Hendrik Helmer told the state-owned Australian Broadcasting Corporation that he had unsuccessfully tried to suck out the insect using his vacuum cleaner.
“I was hoping it wasn’t a poisonous spider.
I was hoping it didn’t bite me,” he said.
He woke up in the middle of the night with pain in the side of his head. ”Later on, when I stood up and it happened it would sort of hunch me over and drop me down to the ground,” Helmer said.
Attempts to flush the insect out failed and were repeated at the hospital where doctors tried olive oil.
After 10 minutes the creature began to die so the doctor pulled it out with forceps.
“Near the 10-minute mark… somewhere about there, he started to stop burrowing but he was still in the throes of death-twitching,” he said.
The roach was 2 centimeters long.

Large numbers of devotees are thronging the Brajeshwari Devi temple here every day to pay obeisance and have glimpse of a 1,400 kg butter idol, temple official said Thursday.
The 14 quintal butter idol, made by 18 priests, will remain on the 'pindi' or iconography of the goddess till Jan 20, temple official Pawan Patial told IANS.
He said the butter idol was made by using `ghee' donated by the devotees. The priests, with a unique technique, purified it with water 108 times.
According to legend, when the goddess was injured during a fight with demons, her wounds were treated with butter on Makar Sankranti by gods.
The butter, when removed from the 'pindi' Jan 20, will be distributed among the devotees. It's a belief that the butter treats chronic skin ailments and joint pains.

As people approach the unattended stroller, lured in by the sound of a baby crying, the devil infant springs up and screams bloody murder.
The obscene baby also projectile vomits and makes vulgar hand gestures. The reactions are priceless.
“It was screams followed by tons and tons of laughter,” Sam Pezzullo, one of the video’s producers told ABC News.
The prank was captured with hidden cameras and uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday. The video has gone viral, garnering more than 5 million views.

Mumbai University professor Neeraj Hatekar, suspended by the university for allegedly misleading press about mismanagement at the university, took classes on a pavement outside the varsity campus on Tuesday. Hatekar, an economics stream professor, held classes in Kalina, just outside the Kalina campus.
An NDTV report quoted him as saying, "Dissent and debate is not encouraged at the University. A politically-backed kitchen cabinet runs Mumbai University. When Mr Welukar joined, the university was ranked 96, now it is 150."
After his suspension, Professor Hatekar, a widely respected teacher and Cambridge University fellow, said he will not only fight his suspension but will also continue to discuss the issue of the university not being open to criticism.

A man in Bihar disowned his son and filed a defamation case against him Saturday for marrying out of caste.
Sidhnath Sharma, a Patna lawyer, also asserted that his son Sushant Jasu could no longer use his name and will have to pay Rs.10,000 copyright fees every time he used it.
Filing a defamation suit of Rs.1 crore against his son in the court at Danapur here, Sharma said: "My image and honour was hurt by my son, who solemnized an inter-caste marriage against our wishes, now he must compensate for it..."
Sushant Jasu, who works for the central government as a senior tax assistant in Gujarat's Palampur town, married a girl, a resident of Danapur, Patna who works in a private bank on Nov 19, 2013.
An angry Sharma said: "... I and my wife spent time and money to nurse my son for years but he betrayed us. He fell in love with a girl who came into his life two years ago only."
He claimed his son's act has ended a nearly 400-year-old family tradition of marrying within their own caste.

The 27-year-old government employee from Bangalore spelt 40 words backwards within a minute to break a previous Guinness record set by an American, who spelt 35 words in reverse in a minute.
"People often ask me how I do it. I don't know the answer. My mind just works in a strange way," said Hathwar, breaking into a smile.
Breaking records is not new to Hathwar. In 2011, he clinched the world record for the "fastest backwards spelling of 50 words" in 1 minute and 22.53 seconds. In 2012, he set a new high by spelling 30 randomly chosen words in reverse in a minute.
"This record was recently broken. So I decided to step into the arena again," he said.
In keeping with the guidelines issued by the Guinness World Records, two officials from the Tamil Nadu Athletic Association were present at the venue to keep a tab on the time. He spelt 13 four-letter and six-letter words and 14 eight-letter words. Some of the words included quiver, humanity, Botany, fumigate, volume, filament, cylinder, sapphire and appendix.

Islamabad : Eight members of a family jumped into a river to avoid ending up in police custody in Pakistan's Sindh province Sunday, a media report said.
The people -- three women and five children -- belonged to a family of a proclaimed offender, Geo News reported.
All are feared drowned.
The body of one child was recovered later, the report added.
"The women feared that the police would take them away and then use them as hostages to force the wanted criminal to surrender, so they preferred to drown than fall in the hands of the police," the report quoted a source as saying.

A cow with five legs has been hailed a miracle because when pregnant women touch its fifth hoof they give birth to baby boys.
Raj Pratap’s three-year-old male calf, called Raju, now is a star in Raipur, India, since a woman with four daughters touched the animal’s fifth hoof and begged for her next child to be a boy.
The woman delivered twin boys in February this year, word soon spread that the calf’s fifth leg. Raju's anomaly a very rare condition which affects just one in every five million cows.
Since news got out about the fifth leg, Mr Pratap, a cattle herder, has been swamped by pregnant women who pay to touch the hoof with 30 women so far stumping up around 500 rupees, for the privilege.
All the 30 women delivered boys. The owner of the cow is so confident of his ‘miracle calf’ that he offers refunds if the baby born is a girl.
On December 23, the cow celebrated its 33rd victory, after the woman who touched its ‘magical hoof’ gave birth to triplets….all of them boys.

In a bizarre incident, two sisters in Pakistan’s Punjab province withdrew Rs 17 lakh from their account and burnt them in front of the bank branch.
Naheed, 40, and Rubina, 35, of Jhelum’s Bilal Town area visited the Chak Nasa branch of National Bank of Pakistan three days ago to withdraw Rs 1.7 million from a fixed deposit account, Jhelum’s district police officer Afzal Butt said.
Due to procedural and other issues involved, the bank manager told the sisters that their request could not be met immediately, the police officer said.
So, the two women visited the bank branch again yesterday and asked the manager to give them the money.
“The sisters were handed over the money at about noon.
They took the currency notes outside the branch and simply set them afire,” Butt was quoted as saying by Dawn daily.
An eyewitness told police that when a shopkeeper and a passer-by tried to stop the sisters from burning the notes, the elder one took out a pistol and said they had every right to do whatever they wanted to.
Soon, a large number of people gathered around the two women, only to look at the currency notes burning.
Police later arrived at the scene and collected the ashes, the report said.
It said that the women had deposited Rs 28 lakh with the bank about a year ago after selling the property they had inherited from their father Raja Muhammad Iqbal, who was killed in mysterious circumstances a couple of years ago.

Tens of thousands of dead bats have fallen from the sky as a “catastrophic” heatwave hits parts of eastern Australia.
The RSPCA estimated that 100,000 could have died from heat exhaustion in record temperatures in southern Queensland.
Spokesman Michael Beatty says the heatwave was a significant blow to the population of bats across the state.
“The heatwave was basically a catastrophe for all the bat colonies in south-east Queensland,” he said.
“That's obviously going to have a pretty disturbing impact on those colonies and those colonies are vital to our ecosystem.”

Salinas - An intricate crop circle has been discovered in Salinas, California, last Sunday morning of December 29, 2013. Early walkers saw two bursts of light, first thought to be a message from outer space, but now believed to be man-made, not alien, in origin.
Approximately 200 feet wide and two feet high, the crop circle was designed overnight with intricate patterns of circles and squares on a beautiful green barley field on a Chualar farm in Salinas Valley, two hours south of San Francisco.
The bursts of light that eye-witnesses saw during the night were green. A camera video taken of the sighting and placed on YouTube the next day immediately went viral among the UFO audience.

AGRA: Four policemen have been suspended for stopping traffic to clear the way for vehicles of a former UP police chief and his family that apparently left many commuters stranded including the wife of a top bureaucrat in the state.
Former director general of police Prakash Singh and his family were on their way to a memorial of the founder of the Radhasoami faith in Dayalbagh on Sunday when the traffic was allegedly held up by the cops to let their cars pass.
According to sources, the wife of a top UP government bureaucrat, who was stuck in the traffic jam, made a clipping of the incident and sent it to her husband, who called up local police authorities.
SSP Shalabh Mathur said he had ordered the suspension of the four policemen — two sub-inspectors and as many constables - for causing the traffic jam and the incident would be inquired into by the circle officer, east, K P Yadav.
The suspended cops are PRO to the DIG of Agra range, sub inspector Pramendra, SI Sanjeev Dubey of the New Agra police station and constables Suresh Kumar Singh and Raghuvir Singh of the Cheetah mobile squad.

In a public display of blind faith, NCP workers bathed Maharashtra Labour Minister and party leader Hasan Mushrif in milk to ‘purify’ him from an ink attack by a fellow worker.
The incident in Kolhapur on Friday ironically occurred in a state which is the first in the country to pass a legislation against superstition.
As the incident sparked an outrage, Mushrif apologised for the action of his supporters.
On Thursday, an NCP worker walked to the stage at a public function in Buldhana where Mushrif was seated and poured black ink on him. NCP workers caught the man, identified as Namdeo Dongardive, and handed him over to the police.
